Per the usual, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols enjoyed a solid season in 2010. Pujols finished near the top of the National League in homers, RBIs and batting average and was in competition for the first National League Triple Crown in more than 50 years. Though he fell short of the ultimate mark, Pujols had plenty of reasons to smile after finishing his 10th season in the big leagues. Former major league pitcher Kelvin Jimenez has signed a contract with the Rakuten Eagles of Japan's Pacific League. The team announced Friday that the signing of the 30-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic. Jimenez made his major league debut in 2007 with the St. Louis Cardinals and was 3-0 with a 6.82 ERA and 35 strikeouts in two seasons with the National League team.

The last big free agent signing for the St. Louis Cardinals was Scott Rolen at third base. When he got hurt and his output became more of an issue, manager Tony LaRussa let him go after benching him in the 2006 NLCS according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch . Free-agent catcher Gerald Laird and the St. Louis Cardinals have reached agreement on a $1 million, one-year contract. The 31-year-old Laird hit .207 with five home runs and 25 RBIs last season in a part-time role with Detroit. He's expected to be a backup to Yadier Molina with the Cardinals. Tuesday's deal includes the chance to make an additional $300,000 in performance bonuses.

The St. Louis Cardinals traded shortstop Brendan Ryan to the Seattle Mariners for minor league right-hander Maikel Cleto on Sunday. Ryan hit .223 with a poor .279 on-base percentage and 11 steals in just fewer than 500 plate appearances last season.
